Ihpetonga's Brilliant Ball 1894

Brooklyn's Exclusive Society at the Academy

The Ihpetonga Ball, which is to Brooklyn what the Patriarchs' dance is to New York, took place last night in the Assembly Rooms of the Academy of Music, Montague Street, Brooklyn. The Ihpetonga organization consists of sixty men, each of whom moves in the most exclusive social set of the City of Churches. The efforts of the Ihpetonga begins and ends with its annual dance. Each of the members has the privilege of issuing five invitations.

The rooms in which the dance took place last night were lavishly decorated. The stairways and corridors were thickly lined with palms and tropical plants. The ballroom was beautiful with tapestries resting on a background of pale yellow.

At regular intervals were white pilasters with gilded capitals, supporting a cornice studded with hundreds of incandescent lights. The pilasters rested on bases, on which were jardinières filled with roses and lilies. Mirrors were also used in profusion.

The musicians were hidden behind a huge screen of white and pink azaleas. In the assembly room in which supper was served at small tables, the walls were hidden by groups of fir trees. Overhead laurel and rose wreaths swung from the chandeliers. The smaller rooms were also tastefully decorated.

The cotillion was led by Arthur M. Hatch and Miss Lillian Talmage. The favors consisted of rosettes, with the word "Ihpetonga" thereon for the men, and Louis XIV. canes for the women.
